What is the BEST way to screen for Breast Cancer?

by Dr. Allison Middleman

October is breast cancer awareness month, which is the perfect time to talk about the recommendations for breast cancer screening. The goal of breast cancer screening is to find and detect cancer early, when it is easier to treat. The best tool we have for this screening is a mammogram, a low-dose xray of the breast.

At what age should you start getting mammograms?

The current, updated recommendations for breast cancer screening from the ACOG (American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology) & US Preventative Services Task Force are as follows:

  • Start mammograms at age 40, rather than age 50 as previously recommended, and continue screening until age 75.

  • Get a mammogram annually or every other year

  • Clinical breast exams every 1-3 years from ages 25-39, and annually after age 40

What about breast self-exams?

  • Breast self-exams are no longer recommended; what is more important is breast self-awareness

  • Breast self-exams are no longer recommended due to risk of harm from false positive screening tests

  • What is the difference between a breast self- exam and breast self-awareness? A breast-self exam is a regular, repetitive inspection of one’s breasts for the purpose of detecting breast cancer. For example, you may have heard the recommendation to perform a self-breast exam once per month. Breast self-awareness, on the other hand, is the awareness of the normal appearance and feel of one’s breasts, without routine examination. The goal of self breast awareness is to know what is normal for you, so that if something changes, you recognize it.

  • If you notice a change in your breasts at any point, such as a lump, pain, redness, or nipple discharge, notify your doctor.

Please note that these guidelines apply only to people who are considered at average risk of breast cancer. Screening guidelines may differ for people who are considered high risk. Aren’t sure about your risk level or when you should start mammograms? Talk to your doctor!
