Fibroscan™

What is Fibroscan?

Neighborhood Naturopathic offers FibroScan, a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that measures the stiffness of the liver using ultrasound technology. This test is commonly used to assess liver health, diagnose liver fibrosis (scarring), and monitor chronic liver conditions such as fatty liver, hepatitis or cirrhosis. The results of this test can help your medical team:

  • Evaluate the degree of liver fibrosis or scarring.

  • Monitor the progression or regression of liver disease.

  • Assist in the management and treatment decisions for liver-related conditions.

The procedure:

Fibro Scan uses transient elastography, a technology that sends a small vibration pulse through the liver to measure its stiffness. The procedure involves the following steps:

  1. You will lie on your back on an examination table (see below)

  2. A small amount of Ultrasound gel will be applied to the tip of the probe then placed over the liver area to take measurements.

  3. You may feel slight pressure or vibration during the procedure, but it is generally painless.

  4. This procedure can take up to 30 minutes.

FibroScan is considered safe and non-invasive. However, like any medical procedure, there may be some potential risks, including:

  • Mild discomfort at the site where the probe is applied.

  • Rare, but possible, skin irritation from the gel used during the procedure.

  • In extremely rare cases, discomfort or slight bruising may occur, but these are temporary.

How do I prepare for my FibroScan?

In order to obtain the most accurate results, please don’t eat or drink anything 3 hours before your procedure. It is fine to drink water if needed to take medication. If possible, please wear a loose fitting top to easily access the right side of the ribcage.

How much does FibroScan cost?

  • Price billed out of pocket: $144
