BIOFEEDBACK THERAPY
Unique Care
Our bodies are holistic in nature, each part connected to the next. We believe in personalized medicine and spend time with our patients to ensure they are educated, empowered, and cared for in their health journey. Here at the clinic Dr. Juliana Langdon offers biofeedback therapy as a supportive, skills-based approach to understanding and supporting your nervous system. This therapy can be used as part of a comprehensive plan to support many chronic conditions and your ongoing health and wellbeing.
What is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback Therapy uses sensors to provide real-time information about physiological signals such as heart rate patterns, breathing, muscle tension, and peripheral temperature. These signals reflect how your body and nervous system are responding in the moment.
Because the nervous system plays a central role in regulating many body systems, working with it can have wide-reaching effects. By supporting nervous system balance, biofeedback may influence digestion, sleep, cardiovascular function, pain perception, mood, and stress resilience, which is why improvements are often noticed across multiple symptoms rather than in just one area.
With guidance from your provider, you learn how small, intentional changes in breath, attention, posture, or pacing can influence these patterns. Over time, many people are able to apply these skills outside of sessions, without equipment, in daily life.
Biofeedback does not diagnose disease. It is used as a therapeutic tool to support symptom management, nervous system regulation, and mind-body awareness.
Who May Benefit From Biofeedback
Biofeedback can support conditions such as:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Anxiety
Hypertension
Insomnia
Tension headaches
Other stress-associated conditions.
Your provider will help determine whether biofeedback is appropriate for your specific needs.
How Biofeedback Fits Into Your Care
At Neighborhood Naturopathic, biofeedback is offered as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. It may be integrated with primary care, counseling, lifestyle medicine, herbal support, or other therapies depending on your needs.
Biofeedback is most effective when offered as a series rather than a single session. We ask patients to commit to a minimum of four weekly or biweekly sessions to begin. For many people, an initial series of eight sessions, scheduled weekly or biweekly, is recommended to allow adequate time for learning, practice, and integration.
Scheduling & Next Steps
If you are interested in biofeedback, you can either call the clinic to schedule or book an appointment through our online scheduling system. An initial visit may be recommended to assess goals, readiness, and appropriateness before beginning a biofeedback series. If you have additional questions, please see below for additional information.
What to Expect During a Session
Biofeedback sessions are typically 45 minutes and involve active participation.
Depending on your goals and clinical presentation, your provider may assess:
Heart rate variability (HRV)
Breathing patterns and pacing
Muscle tension
Peripheral temperature as a marker of circulation and relaxation
In addition to these physiological signals, sessions often include attention to symptom presentation, emotional patterns, and physical sensations as they arise. This may include noticing stress responses, shifts in mood, bodily cues, or areas of tension or ease.
Together, these observations help guide treatment, track progress over time, and offer deeper insight into how your autonomic nervous system responds across both physical and emotional experiences.
Initial Visit
During an initial biofeedback visit, you may:
Discuss the framework and principles of Biofeedback
Review relevant health history and goals to ensure biofeedback is an appropriate support
Introduce home practices and outline for future sessions
Return Visit
During return visits, you may:
Review progress, questions, and experiences since the previous session
Revisit physiological patterns to track change over time
Practice and refine regulation skills
Build confidence applying these tools in daily life
People often report increased body awareness, moments of calm, or temporary fatigue after sessions. Experiences vary, and there is no “right” response.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does biofeedback cost and is biofeedback covered by insurance?
Biofeedback sessions are billed as an office visit (99215), along with a $20 non-covered clinical services (NCS) fee. Patients are encouraged to confirm that their insurance plan covers naturopathic services and to understand any potential out-of-pocket costs prior to scheduling. Self-pay options are available for patients who prefer not to bill insurance or whose plans do not cover naturopathic services.
Our administrative team is happy to help answer general billing questions and support you in understanding your options.
biofeedback safe?
Biofeedback is generally low risk and non-invasive. Your provider will review any considerations based on your health history.
Will biofeedback replace medications or therapy?
Biofeedback is not a substitute for emergency care, prescribed medications, or therapy. It is used as a supportive tool alongside other treatments when appropriate.
How soon will I notice changes?
Some people notice shifts quickly, while others experience gradual change over time. Progress varies and depends on individual factors and engagement with practice. The first few sessions are often focused on learning about your unique body, nervous system patterns, and responses. Follow-up sessions are where we fine-tune these skills and focus on how to integrate them more fully into your daily life.
How is this different from doing breathwork at home or tracking HRV on a wearable device?
While practices like breathwork and wearable data can be helpful, biofeedback sessions offer guided, real-time interpretation and clinical context. Working with a provider allows you to understand how your unique nervous system patterns relate to symptoms, emotions, and daily stressors, and to tailor practices accordingly. Biofeedback also helps you learn which tools are most effective for you, build confidence using them, and integrate these skills beyond sessions without relying on devices alone.
